Hello! I'm so glad you're here! Welcome to The Other Side of Neutral and thank you for joining us today in the Harvest Haven Fall Tour 2016, hosted by Summer of She Leaves a Little Sparkle! If you are joining me after seeing Oscar's on point and sophisticated fall decor, welcome, I'm so glad you have decided to pop over here!
I don't think I am alone in stating that Fall is simply a magical time of year! I am lucky to live in Ohio where we get to enjoy all 4 seasons at their finest. Fall is the most beautiful change in scenery of them all. I love to embrace the natural beauty and bring the fall elements indoors! I hope you enjoy my little home tour and find some inspiration to decorate your own this year!
It's no secret my home is a builder grade, cookie cutter house. I devote my blog to sharing with you all the ways I add character! Like my painted staircase for instance! Since the stairs are a bold design, I keep the fall colors and tones neutral so as not to compete, only compliment.
A mix of real and faux pumpkins line the stairs along with a few lanterns and fall foliage. I love mixing natural elements with "fake". It keeps costs down and allows decor to last from year to year! The mums are real while the wheat stalks are not!
This antique cabinet is one of my favorite pieces to decorate. The shelves are perfect for displaying fun finds like the vintage toy truck and my handmade, fabric pumpkins!
The first room beyond the entryway is our "formal living room" Not much about our house is formal, so we call this room anything but. The front room, the office, the guest room...it has many "jobs!" My favorite piece in here is the library card catalog. I took 2 smaller, metal pieces and combined them into one large piece by building a wooden frame!
Simply adding pumpkins and a sweet message to my vintage typewriter add the perfect fall touches without being too fussy!
I receive a lot of questions about the flooring in our front two rooms. I surprise most when I say this is another DIY of mine.... plywood turned hardwoods!
Adding a daybed to our front room was a smart choice for us with out of town family. Decorating it with amazing plaid throws and fun pillows makes it even better! My new pillows this year came from 521 Handmade. It doesn't get anymore fall than "Pumpkin Everything" and "Sweater Weather", am I right!? Head to her shop and use code FALL10 for 10% off your purchase now through September 14th!
Adding pears to my pumpkin displays added such a fun extra layer of color without being too bold. I love the dimension they created from the white painted pumpkins to the faint green heirloom pumpkins and of course the white, baby boos!
Our family room is my biggest decorating (and photographing) challenge. The space is long, narrow and dark. As I was preparing for this tour, moving furniture around lead to scrubbing carpets which lead to painting the walls! I have a little syndrome I like to call, "If you give a mouse a cookie", where one thing leads to the next! The new white walls (Bleached Linen by Behr) helped the space feel less dark. In this room, much of my decor came from my Gable Lane Crates! The trending decor I get from the monthly boxes really is amazing!
Church pews, old dictionaries, nesting boxes, grain sack fabrics, and old shutters turned wall sconces are some of my favorite pieces in this space. Each item has a story and I love how they combine to create appealing vignettes that are different! My friend Wendy from Peek Pillow Originals does great things with grain sack ticking. She made me this adorable pumpkin patch pillow!
A recent antiquing trip turned up this great deconstructed chair for $20! I found a vintage, feed sack as well as ticking fabric the same day! I knew they were made for each other. A few hours, my sewing machine and some stuffing later, I had a new chair. Looooove it!
Oh the dining room! Does your family eat in your dining room, or do they understand that it's simply there for you to create beautiful tablescapes that we all just admire? No? That's just me? LOL
Creating a table setting is one of my favorite things to do. Almost everything you see in this photo comes from my collections of Good Will and thrift store shopping. Especially the white dishes and pitchers! I created the center piece using a mix of neutral pumpkins of varying sizes and filled any spaces with fresh eucalyptus, baby's breath and pale green leafy stems. I laid the "runner" (a blanket scarf from my closet, shhhhh!) across the short span of the table rather than lengthwise. Each plate is sitting inside of a round basket with handles!
My little leaf plates were a fun addition to the table this year. I received these in the Fall Tablescape crate from Gable Lane Crates! So much fun!
I created a fun beverage station for apple cider or a moscow mule! The old pie safe has been refinished quite a few times, the first by my dad. It still has his initials and the date on the back! I also found and hung 100 year old, wood rain gutters as plate racks on the wall.
The beverage station wouldn't be complete with out this amazing sign from Wandering Heart Signs. It touches on the most important smells of fall... allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg! Ahhhhhh!
I created a lovely almost "live" fall centerpiece for our kitchen island. It's full of apples, pears, pumpkins, succulents, eucalyptus, babies breath and a delicious apple cake!
I filled a large galvanized tray with a mix of apples, pumpkins and heirloom gourds for a light and airy centerpiece on our eat in kitchen table.
Our kitchen is another area of our home I have added DIY character. I painted our cabinets, added a dark island and fun grain sack stripes and numbers to the upper cabinets! Our "brick" back splash was an affordable upgrade with it being wall paper!
My kitchen concludes the Fall tour of my home today. I truly hope you enjoyed viewing the pictures and you are leaving with inspiration and ideas for your own home!
