Exciting things are happening on the home front. We are finishing our basement! I have never lived in a home where finishing the basement was ever an option, so this is a new experience for me. I am excited to take you along this journey with us from the initial floor plan that I'll share with you today, through cabinets, counter tops and flooring selections, to the fun elements of decorating!
We have lived in our builder grade, spec home, for 5 years now and I am so pleased to be finishing our basement. In the North East, most homes have full basements and we tend to take full advantage! Up until recently, ours was full of, well, crap! lol We had so many visions in the beginning, but projects on the main two floors continued to take precedence. The basement became storage, and not organized storage! So, before we could even talk about a layout, we had to take action and clean out!
After two weeks of an ugly dumpster in our driveway, we had a clean and empty space waiting for our floor plan.
We have about 1,000 square feet to work with down here. Unfortunately, our HVAC and hot water tank sit right in the middle, so we will have to work around that. Our plan is to include a family room, kitchenette, 3/4 bathroom, and a combined laundry and craft room. Wish list items were a dedicated music room for my husband, an auto racing simulator for one of our boys and opening up the stairwell wall on our main floor.
After meeting with 5 different contractors, we made a final decision to go with MLC Builders INC. They are a company local to Barberton, Ohio, a town nearby ours. We finalized a layout of the space and were pleasantly surprised to be able to include just about everything on our list!
I love seeing a basic floor plan come to life as walls go up and design elements come together! As of today, we have framing, electrical and insulation complete. Drywall begins this week and flooring, cabinets and counter tops should be arriving next week!
Join me later this week as I highlight some favorite basement designs that inspired my selections for our home!
Thanks for joining me on our journey to finish our basement!
